This Big Sleeping Seated Resting Buddha Statue is hand carved by a talented Balinese carpenter named Komang and his two older Brothers. It was carved in their own workshop in Sidemen. A small Valinese village, located in the east part of the Island.
Wood Carving is one of the arts mastered by Balinese people from ancient times. In addition to ornaments and decorations at temples, wood carvings are also usually bought and sold to meet the needs of life. As time goes by, the young Balinese generation has begun to become less interested in this work, leaving only the older generation to practise this beautiful craft. Fortunately, Komang and his 2 brothers are still working to preserve this craft. In a village in the east part of Bali, namely Sidemen, they are still trying to work on wooden sculptures made from Suar wood, one of the fast growing trees with a fairly wide diameter.
Influenced from the beginning of the Hindu-Buddhist Empire that ruled Indonesia, it is no wonder that Komang's inspiration for his artworks are mostly statues of Siddhartha Gautama. Also knows as Buddha Shakyamuni. This particular statue is known for giving a calm, peaceful and serene feeling to the viewer. So it’s a good relief to look at it after working for a whole day. Especially while beeing ‘locked’ at home, during this current situation.
